Oh, the Humanities!
The title is a pun, an adaptation from the commentary during the Hindenberg disaster. In obvious distress, the broadcaster cried out, "Oh, the humanity!". His cry illuminated one of our better virtues – fellow feeling – not merely for fellow Homo sapiens sapiens, but for other species.
The Age of Enlightenment (18th c.) brought a shift in focus from Religious Dogma to Reason. Then, as now, most citizens did not share the advances made by the enlightened thinkers of their time.
